"Bold Steps"

15 February 2022

90s

The long walk to freedom.

Designer Karabo Poppy provides the voiceover for this film as she strides alongside fellow South African go-getters rapper Nasty C and fashionista Rich Mnisi. Even for Black South Africans born after the end of apartheid, there are countless barriers to success in a country where the white minority's grip on political power has been loosened more than its grip on wealth and influence, and - in that context - this is a particularly powerful message.

Director Fausto Becatti has provided a beautiful momentum to the film as the trio's bold sortie through the urban streets starts off unaccompanied but slowly gathers a crowd... denoting the growing cultural influence of its stars.

Johnnie Walker has, for a long time, successfully associated itself with talented people carving a distinctive path through life, and it's a connection which serves them well here, as this film seems likely to put the brand into the minds of a demographic who are outside of its usual customer base.
