"The Monster"

2 August 2022

Beast of a nation.

Greece's waste management problem reaches its logical conclusion in this well-staged monster movie. Scored by The Tiger Lillies' Crack of Doom (a dark cabaret song that contains pointed lyrics like "You've made the progress of a snail"), the ad sees mounds of rubbish form into a kaiju.

The creature design is superb as it crawls, swims, and marches across the country. The more rubbish it absorbs, the more fearsome it looks—it even gains a fiery tail thanks to another environmental hazard, a downed barbecue.

So, how does one defeat such a menace? Rather than wait for another kaiju to appear à la Godzilla vs Kong, a young girl just pulls a plastic bottle out of the monster's face. Recycling, the ad claims, should be Greece's weapon of choice from now on.
