The Legacy of Plastic

What a clever idea... a creature, washed up on a remote British shore, dies despite the efforts of those who find it. They rid it of the plastic waste inside it - and the children know instinctively to keep it hydrated - but all to no avail. The people feel it's best to allow it to be reclaimed by the sea, and in doing so the strange new creature is lost to science - and the world.

Tom Tagholm's film is just over three minutes long, but feels like seconds because it's so gripping. We're told at the end that 95% of our oceans remain unexplored; and it's true that we know far more about distant universes in general than, say, the specific ecology of the Mariana Trench a couple of miles below the earth's surface.

It's a sobering reminder that mankind as a species is destroying our planet while paradoxically we as individuals want to save it, and will hopefully inspire more to take direct action.
