"Against the Odds"

28 June 2019

80s

For the players.

This well crafted film rattles through some of the grassroots football schemes funded by the National Lottery. As England's women currently ensure another memorable summer for the beautiful game, director Ben Falk takes a closer look at those playing for more than fame or glory.

These include amputees, children with Down's syndrome, the homeless, and others whose playing time has been restricted for whatever reason. They're also joined by youngsters getting their first taste of the game, and gents who aren't ready for retirement just yet.

The result is a dynamic yet genial perspective on the local game from one of its main supporters. There will always be those who tear up their lottery ticket after those so-called 'lucky numbers' fail for the umpteenth time, but this is a salient reminder that it's not the winning but the taking part that counts.
