Impossible Winner
Jack White and Alison Mosshart's band The Dead Weather have released a cryptic new track whose attendant promo channels the spirit of Todd Browning's 'Freaks' and Lynch's 'Eraserhead'. As a bunch of supernatural oddities, they're locked in a boxcar with other similarly troubled folk and terrorised by their gaolers - one of whom has a head consisting entirely of a roaring, ogre-ish mouth. The track - plaintive, orchestral, and suffused with White's trademark vintage sound - is a solidly strong number made even stronger by this promo. It's a collaboration by Sophie Muller and Ross McDowell, and strikes a terrific balance between unsettling imagery and darkly wry humour with enough obliqueness to compel you to watch it again for all the bits you missed first time around. Classy stuff.
