"House Love"

Love is... a happy house.
This lovely film by Peter Thwaites creates a parallel between two neighbours' burgeoning love affair and something similar going on with their respective houses. Using The Carpenters classic 'We've Only Just Begun' as its soundtrack, it opens on the day a new family moves in and lets us see how the daughter of the incoming family catches the eye of the boy across the road. As we follow the sweet progress of their relationship, we can't hep noticing the flirtation going on in the background as one house 'makes eyes' at the other. The development of the first love affair is echoed by the second until the fateful day when the couple move in together and the abandoned house becomes a neglected wreck. At this point, DAVID wondered if it was all going to get a bit Amityville Horror for the lovely young family but, sadly, this dark possibility is not explored. Instead, the young family take it upon themselves to do up the old house using tools and materials from the advertised DIY chain and get it sold... only for the whole cycle to repeat itself.
