Gripping sounds
The Today programme remains the most essential source of news in Britain and this terrific trail perfectly captures its importance. By presenting an account of the Ebola crisis without sensationalising it, the programme offered a compelling account of what is really going on in parts of Africa. While we may turn away from the voyeurism of graphic images when they are presented on TV news, this account from a medic involved in trying to save lives holds us completely and we're reminded of the power of radio. Given the manner in which it demonstrates that words can sometimes have more power than images, it's ironic perhaps that this should be an advert running on TV. But the fantastic restraint shown by director Matt Rhodes brings home the potency of a verbal account and ensures a real appreciation of it along with the programme that broadcast it.
