The New International Sound Pt. II

Recently we said that we prefer a promo with an innovative idea rather than one that relies on slick execution alone. Here's another that confirms our preference - Inigo Westmeier's superb piece for Gener8ion, the project of French producer Surkin.

With vocals by M.I.A., the already banging track is elevated into something even more memorable and resonant thanks to the promo's footage of students at Shaolin Tagou - China's largest youth fighting school which is 36,000 strong.

The footage comes from Westmeier's 2012 documentary 'Dragon Girls', about the youngsters at the school. It's the sheer scale of it that takes your breath away. From our small island-nation viewpoint with its weedy, indoor inclinations, it's hard to comprehend what we're seeing. We're used to straggly gaggles of kids dragging themselves to the local comp of a morning and feeling vaguely threatened by their surliness. So to see such a co-ordinated display from these focused tiny tough nuts is awe-inspiring and somehow humbling.
