Space becomes child's play

Despite children's programming becoming a digital-only presence on our television screens, it's heartening to know that there are still those in the creative sphere willing to put the effort into filling little heads with big ideas.

Thanks to Karmarama and Red Bee Media's charming trail for the Cbeebies brand's season of space-themed output, children and parents will relish exploring the universe together.

It's full of wonder and affection, and has a magical lightness of touch thanks to Jim Gilchrist's direction and Mark Connell's lo-fi aesthetic. Toy bunnies float in space; planets become comfy chairs; while a little girl's pigtails are given the zero gravity treatment thanks to some creative stringwork.

It's a homespun universe that's infinitely more appealing than any CGI concoction. While these children are familiar with tablets and smartphones, the importance of old-fashioned play is also underlined nicely... and choosing The Carpenter's classic 'Calling Occupants' as the soundtrack is inspired. Having worked on trailing so many of the BBC's beloved properties, Red Bee Media showcase their abilities by going to infinity and beyond.
