Lucy is dead; long live Lucy
Eastenders has upped its game in recent months, and its trails leave you in no doubt they're trying to persuade viewers things are hotting up in the Square. This particular spot is excellent, beautifully and malevolently filmed suggesting undercurrents of menace you'd never normally associate with Ian Beale et al. Unusually, the plot under the spotlight has already occurred. Lucy - daughter of the aforementioned chipped-potato purveyor - has been murdered and the killer lurks among the folk of Walford. The stillness and detail of the shots have an impressively ambiguous nature - which of the characters is simply going about their business and which is covering their traces? Thus begins a lengthy wait to uncover her murderer instead of the usual three days of finger-pointing followed by a ludicrous exposition. Even if you gave up on the soap after years of faithful viewing, this is the type of thing to get you to give it another go. Mrs DAVID has booked her appointment with the tellybox, at any rate.
