Acclaimed director Duran Sodré behind 'Ashe Versus' and 'Nuestros Manos' has joined Eleanor Films in the US, and the company plan to unleash his lyrical visual language and actor-first approach into the American market.
As a former actor - a bad actor, no less, according to the man himself - director Duran Sodré knows a thing or two about coaxing great performances from actors, and it was this actor first approach together with his "lyrical visual language" that persuaded Eleanor's Sophie Gold to bring him to her roster in the US, and make him available to the American market.
What stands out for Sophie Gold, Sodré's "quiet humility and fierce collaborative spirit" and that he "tells stories that unfold like poetry - each frame a study in humanity, intimacy, and instinct."
The mixed media approach of this film for Cervezas Victoria (made as half of the directing partnership with fellow Brazilian Giordano Maestrelli) serves the project brilliantly, and makes for a highly compelling explanation for the idea that it's hands that are secret ingredient in Mexican food.Not only is it beautiful to look at, it makes its case very persuasively, and takes a risky idea - after all, there are reasons why the audience may not want to think of hands as providing a major component of what they eat when they choose Mexican food - and turns it into an unequivocal positive.
Watching the Cervezas Victoria adds weight to this explanation of his work provided by Sodré , "I don’t like to judge things, I like to understand things. This is a feature of me, my way to live. It is why I am able to investigate things and collaborate on things."
Sodré says he is feeling electrified by the intention and ambition he found from his new directorial home: "This urge to grow, this mission to evolve, I like that drive in the production company... I want to grow together. I’m excited to work in the American market."
They sound like a match made in heaven.
