DAVID thought his PlayStation 5 would have melted by now, but it's held its own against the heat so far. That's allowed him to complete 'Mafia: The Old Country' and 'Wax Heads' over the last few weeks—if you need a break from the football, tennis, and/or the latest political clusterfuck, these two games might do the trick.

Developed by Patattie Games, 'Wax Heads' is a digital game about physical media. As the newest employee of Repeater Records, you help customers buy albums they can own—the kind that live on shelves, not servers. The artists may be fictional (shout-out to Roland Tipsy, Gecko Jester, and Snarl, to name but a few), but the buzz from every successful sale is real. There's no need to worry about spreadsheets or payroll here. Instead, players are encouraged to read as many blurbs, zines, and blog posts as possible to become a true counter superstar. As good as the main story is, it's the back-and-forth between you and the customers that hits the best notes. Learn who they are, and the albums you recommend mean so much more. |

'Mafia: The Old Country' lives life in the slow lane and is all the better for it. Set in 1900s Sicily, the fourth entry in the 'Mafia' series wants players to soak up the atmosphere, invest in the story and characters, and smell the olives. It helps that your two modes of transport are horses and cars (we refer back to the 1900s part—if you want speed, consider 'Forza Horizon 6' instead). Still here? Then you’ve also got a ton of knife fights to look forward to. It's a shame how overused this mechanic is, as there's a brutal, bloody beauty to the way characters agree to settle matters once and for all. If it's more traditional beauty you're after, feast your eyes on Hangar 13's lush and balmy take on Sicily, as well as top-notch cutscenes that satisfy so way more than hollow side quests. |
