New Signing

Jason Stone

Colourist Vlad Barin joins Studio RM.

Studio RM has strengthened its offer by securing the services of highly regarded colourist Vlad Barin and, according to RM's founding director Robert Moore, their new signing 'brings a rare blend of tactile craft and cinematic sensitivity to his grading'.

According to Robert Moore - founding director of Studio RM - the company's new signing Vlad Barin "brings a rare blend of tactile craft and cinematic sensitivity to his grading". Directors Tyler Mitchell, Martin Werner and Femi Ladi would tend to agree, having collaborated with Barin on their projects, and benefitted from his impressive skill set.

Barin, who will work between Studio RM's London and New York operations, learned his craft in the dark rooms of the NFTS where he developed a mastery of analogue techniques. This artistic grounding has given him an innate understanding of colour, and it enables him to exploit the digital tools to the max.

This ad for Google celebrating Liverpool's title win last season may bring a tear to the eye of many of the club's fans (not least because this year's campaign is starting to look like the worst title defence since the Ice Age). Given that Liverpool are known as 'the reds', it's unsurprising that the colour is used as a motif throughout, but Vlad Barin has delivered this with a subtlety which ensures that it doesn't bleed all over director Joel Barney's lovely imagery.

Vlad Barin's grading for this lovely short film demonstrates how attuned he is to what the director has set out to achieve. The beauty lies in the authentic colours in the bucolic scenery, and this has been given room to breathe by Barin's restraint in the grading booth, proving a great understanding of how less can be more.

Robert Moore is certain that his company's latest acquisition will fit right in: "Studio RM has always been about pushing the boundaries of visual storytelling and building a community of artists who share our ethos. Vlad shares that ethos and brings a rare blend of tactile craft and cinematic sensitivity to his grading."
