Blinkink recruits Jonny Look.

Blinkink has signed Los Angeles-based comedy director Jonny Look, whose tactile short films and commercials make a virtue of puppetry, practical effects and analogue oddity.

Blinkink has signed Los Angeles-based director Jonny Look, adding his meticulously handmade strain of surreal comedy to the company's roster. Executive producer Josef Byrne describes Look as a continuation of Blinkink's habit of developing short-film talent for commercials, and says the director will be "a huge part of our US build".

Look's 2020 short film 'Assholes' approaches plant consciousness through the least ethical experiment imaginable. Inspired by research from the 1960s and 70s, the mockumentary follows scientists who resort to torturing their leafy subjects into conversation. Vintage machinery and a faded visual palette help the nonsense retain an unnervingly straight face.

'Write a Song About Heartache' demonstrates similar commitment to an equally daft premise: a musician discovers a painful shortcut to producing new material. Its carefully constructed world, complete with animatronics and original music, shows why Blinkink sees a route from Look's festival shorts into the commercial arena.

That crossover was already visible in 'Zigman', made for a Brain Dead and Reebok collaboration. Look turns the launch into a weary superhero adventure (no doubt inspired by 'Power Rangers'), as DeMorge Brown's permanently vigilant hero finds that saving the world leaves little time for life's ordinary frustrations.

Look has since taken that sideways logic into larger-scale sports advertising. His 2025 Adidas F50 campaign with Lamine Yamal used an obsessively devoted groundskeeper to frame the footballer's destructive speed, making pristine turf and professional irritation as important to the joke as the product.

The American reaches for tailoring rather than corporate language to explain the move. He says Blinkink "fits like a 1970s polyester three-piece suit (real nice)", pointing to the company's history of tactile, surreal filmmaking as the attraction. It's an eccentric analogy, though entirely consistent with the work.

Blinkink

If Blink Productions is the live action arm of the Blink empire, then Blinkink is the place where live action and animation meet... where they shake hands, as it were. By their own description, it's a roster of some of the world's most "visually inventive filmmakers" and a glance at their work demonstrates this to be unquestionably true.
