New Signing

Jason Stone

A Canny signing for Cabin.

Actor-turned-editor Ben Canny has brought his specific set of skills to Cabin in Europe, and indomitable MD Kayt Hall could not be happier, describing herself as thrilled at his arrival.

Canadian Ben Canny once had dreams of treading the boards as an actor, and actually got as far as moving to London to study at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and securing representation from a top agent. In the end though, the precariousness of life as actor did not appeal and he decided he needed to find another outlet for his creativity. Ultimately, he discovered that the craft of editing was more to his liking, and acting's loss was editing's gain, as he's bloody good at it.

It's twenty-three years since Canny abandoned acting, and he has spent most of that time in the editing booth. (Not all of it, of course, like all editors he is allowed out for the occasional walk.) He discovered his calling at the noughties film production company Flynn, where stablemates included Sam Brown, Scott Lyon and Paul Gore. It was here that he decided editing is "the machinery of storytelling".

Ben Canny's previous life as an actor must be incredibly useful when cutting performance-based work, especially when it's something as complex to capture as dance. In this fantastic film for IKEA from director Filip Nilsson, the edit complements the beautiful choreography, subtly enhancing the outcome. It superbly demonstrates that editing doesn't have to be showy to be off-the-charts skilful.

Because of the intimate working relationship between directors and editors, you can judge the latter by the company they keep, and Ben Canny has worked with some of the most exciting directors in the industry today. In this film for Samsung, directed by Matias & Mathias, Canny got to play with another of the strings on his bow, and it's the string that's often most challenging for editors... comedy. He helps the directorial team land all the comic beats, and does so while presenting a really compelling piece of advertising.

It's little wonder that Kayt Hall is so pleased to have secured the services of such an accomplished editor: "We’re thrilled that Ben has joined us at Cabin. We love that he’s unafraid to be a little strange. Coupled with his natural instinct for performance and narrative, that spirit reflects the kind of creative risk-taking we champion. We want editors to feel confident bringing their personality and innovative ideas to their work. Needless to say, we’re excited to be part of Ben’s next chapter and to have him join us in ours"

Ben Canny himself adds: "I want to be part of a place that is fuelled by the most creative side of editing within the commercial industry. Cabin feels like the right home where I can do the kind of work I love - crafted, performance-led storytelling."

Let's go!

With offices on both coasts of America, as well as in London, Cabin are a force to be reckoned with on both sides of the Atlantic when it comes to editing. Their meteoric rise in Europe in recent years can be credited executive producer Kayt Hall as much as to a roster of talent that was already well established in America and shrewd additions in the UK.
