Mak Mahmut Akay arrives at The Visionaries.

London-born director Mak Mahmut Akay now has Corin West and The Visionaries in his corner. Akay's carved out a niche for himself with films that explore his Turkish-Cypriot heritage, like 2022's 'We're Here'.

The eight-minute documentary is a whistle-stop tour of London's Turkish-speaking community. From cafes to barbershops, yoga studios to the Mayor of Enfield's office, it's a personable reminder of what this demographic has achieved. So, why don't more Turkish-speaking people appear on our screens or influence what's shown?

As one contributor notes: "Where there is representation, it's never creatives, actors, or photographers". It's a point well-raised by Akay and his cast, one of whom can only name three famous Turkish-Cypriots. Expect many more thoughtful outings like this in the future.

With a growing commercial reel to boot, Akay's excitement is understandable: "It is an absolute pleasure to be joining The Visionaries' eclectic roster full of directors with unique voices.
