UK Hi Fi

Bose continue their inner life campaign with beautifully weighted ad, this time featuring a kid leaving a school dance. While initially the solo scoot home might seem lonely, the camera stays on his face long enough for the audience to notice a lipstick print.

Casting is everything here. The young man's everyday look is perfect and the glint in his eye as a smile forms on his face -

almost as though it's in response to the viewer noticing the pink smudge on his cheek - is immensely charming.

Bose continue their inner life campaign with another understated ad, this time featuring a kid leaving a school dance. While initially the solo scoot home might seem lonely, the camera stays on his face long enough for the audience to notice a lipstick print.

Following Bose's last high-energy outing staring NFL player Julio Jones, this relaxed film offers a change of pace. We see a ballet dancer in the studio, resting with her headphones on after an exhausting practice session. The focus on the physical demands of dancing is used well here, as it contrasts with the blissful escape found by blocking out the noise.

This energetic ad for Bose shows the role music plays in American football player Julio Jones' life. Effort is turned up to the max here as we see him work out and hone his skills before switching to a pair of noise-cancelling headphones to get in the zone before a game. The tagline 'however you feel really feel' (punctuation not included) isn't great, but the visuals are nicely shot and structured.

So this is how the NFL elite stay in top nick. Veteran wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald still has a skip in his step, according to this Bose commercial. He indulges his inner child when presented with a hopscotch grid and we imagine his Arizona Cardinals teammates will be impressed. While rivals Beats favour a grittier approach, Bose opt for playful and sun-kissed.

Much like 4K televisions, audio systems can find it tricky proving their worth. Bose tout their latest soundbar with the help of Lewis Hamilton - taking a welcome break from the Formula One crunch. 1st Avenue Machine’s Tim Brown crafts a breakneck light show as the volume increases. Of course, hearing is believing with tech like this.

As a woman dances in the empty streets of London, we can't help thinking of Danny Boyle's '28 Days Later' and worrying that she should be keeling an eye out for the rampaging 'infected'. The lone dancer unselfconsciously struts her stuff through the empty streets; past famous landmarks, down deserted main roads, and even in the eerily-silent underground.

As someone who appreciates music on good headphones (Beyerdynamic T51 P being the current model of choice), Mrs DAVID very much likes the idea that what you listen to effectively acts as a time machine and therefore deserves to be of the very best audio quality. If this Bose spot had a little more oomph about it, it would be very good indeed.

"Changing the Mood"

Two young teenagers are listening to music together. It's soft, plaintive, dreamy... the perfect track, in fact, to provoke a first kiss between them. But as their heads lean forward and their lips are about to meet, the mood changes abruptly. Dad has control of the Bose sound system all over the house, and has prudently nipped young love in the bud.

Bose has teamed up with Mercedes Petronas, and this collaboration between Lewis Hamilton and music producer Spinz Beats is the result. We see the F1 driver in the recording studio contributing ideas for a unique soundtrack, so that ambient noises from the track can be incorporated into the music that's produced.

Bose has a terrific product and a great reputation... so it's baffling to see an ad from them that's this basic. If they feel the need to advertise, you'd hope it would be more than a series of cheery snapshots. We can only think they want to communicate what sort of audience appreciates them for the lowest cost possible, in order to plough the savings back into R&D. But frankly, we don't buy that.

This short film takes its time to get around to the product it advertises but at least it should have the full attention of anyone who's managed to hang in there that long. It's a general criticism of this type of media rather than a specific criticism of the film itself (which looks to be a well-made example of this kind of thing) but has anyone considered the likelihood of potential punters watching this to the end?

The young chap here not only doesn't like to be parted from his music ever, he also likes to share it with everyone else. We're sure the concept would work well in other countries, but our very British reaction is that he's being a git and should be beaten to death with the speaker even though it's a nice bit of kit that deserves better.

Bose are selling the first in-ear noise cancelling headphones, which, if you take your music seriously, you want to know more about. The chap whose day we're witnessing evidently likes to block out the world, but how successfully do these buds help him do it? At least it raises the question, priming you to check them out.

Different viewers find themselves emotionally transported to the action onscreen thanks to the quality of Bose's Solo TV sound system. It would have had more impact if the reaction-prompting moments were a little less generic, but we get the idea that nothing stands between the viewer / listener's experience and the sound itself.

Considering Bose has such high standing in the world of hi-fi, you'd think they'd know how to advertise themselves. But no: in terms of impact, this is more flock wallpaper than Rothko painting. Why the insipid track? If what we're watching doesn't engage us (and this doesn't), surely the sound should make us sit up and listen?

Given the reputation that Bose has forged for being a premium brand, it's a bit surprising to see them advertising themselves as though they're a run of the mill offering. The emphasis here is one of youthful fun rather than superior quality but perhaps they're banking on the idea that this is sufficiently well established.

There's precious little live action in this commercial for Bose and this robs it of any meaningful dynamism. But perhaps that doesn't matter... by placing the product at the fore, this commercial expects the device to sell itself and this may prove true.
