USA Fruit-Based Confectionery

Fans of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia will never look at Mrs McDonald the same way again after watching this freakish Skittles ad. Mum (played by Sandy Martin) and her distinctive-looking son like nothing more than eating multi-coloured sweets together. Nothing wrong with that, eh? Well, that's before we learn just how together they are.

The brand enjoy pushing viewers’ buttons, but this is on another level. It’s enough to make Norman Bates shudder. Call it wacky or pure body horror, the ad revels in its gross-out tone. The punchline provides a big laugh, but we imagine some viewers will wish to, well, cut the cord beforehand.

In contrast to their last strange Super Bowl ad featuring Steven Tyler at his most dead-eyed, this year Skittles keep things simple - and it works. We're shown a house late at night, with a guy trying to get the object of his affections to notice him. Instead of throwing pebbles at her window, however, he's decided confectionery might sweeten his chances.

You'd think the irrepressible Steve Tyler would fit right in to the zany world of Skittles, but there's something about the brand's Super Bowl ad that just doesn't click. It's a nice idea incorporating the popular trend of using Skittles as an art material, though despite the Aerosmith frontman's game contribution, the final execution feels more like a mid-set number.

Skittles
"Giraffe Milking"
20s
21 Jan 2016
A giraffe makes use of its head for heights by biting into a rainbow. David Attenborough might raise his eyebrows at the notion, but so far, so good. Down on the ground, a Rastafarian goes about milking the giraffe for all its Skittle goodness. Yet more colourful wackiness from the sweetie maker, but it's lovely to see someone enjoying their job this much.

Skittles
"Holiday Pawn Shop"
50s
16 Dec 2015
If friends and family in the Toronto area find their Christmas presents have mysteriously disappeared after the 25th, this Skittles ad should help clear things up. In an entertaining spoof of cheap and cheerful ads for local businesses, Dale the Dealmaker promises to turn 'gift faces' into smiles by swapping your unwanted goods for Skittles.

Skittles
"Pox"
20s
20 Jun 2015
Having survived cooties, it seems the high schoolers in this 2012 US ad that's just made its way on to UK telly have another contagious ailment to deal with. If being sans sleeves wasn't enough for this poor fellow, he's suffering from a bout of Skittlespox as well. Rather than wander along to the local confectioners for her Skittles fix, his reckless friend then takes a bite of one of his candy sores with predictable results.

"Trim the Rainbow"

10 Mar 2014
A groomer at a dog parlour is tasked with trimming a pooch that is possibly just a substantial cloud. A round blob she shaves off rises skyward and lets loose a shower of Skittles. Huzzah! She trims some more. Rattling with sweeties, the cloud is eventually led away by its elderly owner, while the groomer feasts on E numbers. Quite beautifully berserk.

"Smile"

The campaign strapline 'Taste the Rainbow' is interpreted literally in this execution in which an unprepossessing boy disguises his lack of teeth with Skittles. The resulting smile unfortunately suggests his teeth have rotted as a consequence of too many of the said sweets, but this isn't relevant to the girl who kisses him.

"Tim (Comedy Gala Version)"
60s
7 Jun 2013
This is the third year running that the ad breaks during C4's Comedy Gala have been hijacked by Alan Carr, and they've gone from clumsy to competent to classy. Alan gives a co-worker a dressing down for turning everything to Skittles, and challenges him to "Touch me!" with predictable results.

Skittles
"Treadmill"
30s
26 Sep 2012
A strange looking man runs on a treadmill while another collects the Skittles he 'sweats' as he exercises in this typically weird offering for the fruit confectionery. Two other Skittles enthusiasts question the need to acquire the sweets in this fashion – after all, they're available from shops.

"Walrus"

5 Jul 2012
This hilarious American ad has a woman coming home to discover her friend making out with her 'boyfriend'. But it turns out it's not her 'boyfriend' after all... it just looks like him. Given that the 'boyfriend' in question is a giant walrus, you can imagine that this all plays out extremely strangely.

12 May 2011
Another winning piece of nonsense on behalf of the fruit-based confectionery has a man breaking another's rainbow by mistake. As if this isn't embarrassing enough, his attempt to fix it leads to an incident that looks like it might be life threatening.

"Park"

12 May 2011
Human pigeons surround a Japanese man as he sits on a park bench eating Skittles in this surreal piece for the fruit-based confectionery. There's a touch of Monty Python about this piece of silliness and it's actually pretty funny.

Skittles
"Door"
30s
12 May 2011
A man moving into a new house discovers a small hatch in the living room wall. When he opens it, the advertised confectionery pours into the room in a rainbow-like arc. Rather than being completely freaked out by this, he eats one and then opens a second hatch and is greeted by a strange man.

"Tim"

3 May 2011
This American ad from 2007 has finally made its way on to UK screens. A modern King Midas finds that all that he touches turns to Skittles... a blessing you might think if you like the little fruity sweets but, as with his legendary forbear, Tim has discovered there's a real downside to his 'gift'.

This quirky American ad shows what happens when a man tries to set his liquidiser free after discovering the advertised confectionery which, it's suggested, tastes as good as blended fruit. It's a fun idea but is this a claim that could be made the UK?

You can almost forgive Ulf Johansson for the horror of the recent Halifax ads after watching this splendid American ad for Skittles. A pair of old folk have different approaches for getting a bit of fizz on their tongues... and when we say 'different'... we mean it.

"Plant"

A young man asks his mother whether a specialist can be called to remove the tree branch which has impaled him but since it appears to be connected to the miracle growth of Skittles on the tree she talks him out of it in this extremely odd US ad.

Skittles
"Love Me, Love Me Not"
20s
6 Jul 2008
Another of the charmingly simple animated ads which provide a showcase for the quirky sense of its authors. A hand is removing petals and reciting "love me" and "love me not" in turns. Eventually, the exasperated skittle / flower yells abuse at the lovelorn soul. Strange.

Skittles
"Firewalking"
20s
15 Jun 2008
More from the animated campaign for the fruity confectionery which won plaudits last year. A badly-drawn man successfully negotiates a path of burning Skittles but has not reckoned on the flammability of his legs and has to crawl away at the end when one of them falls off.

"Holding His Breath"

6 Aug 2007
Another addition to this charming series has one strange animated figure asking another what the purple Skittle is doing. He, it turns out, is holding his breath. After a struggle to hold on, he finally opens his mouth and is sent hurtling around like a released balloon.

Skittles
"Sea Sick"
20s
5 Aug 2007
Another in this winning animated series for the little fruit sweeties has a number of strangely-drawn figures enjoying a boat ride... apart from, that is, the green Skittle on the back of the boat who is feeling sea sick and who wails unhappily in contrast to the others' revelry.

"Lipstick"

30 Jul 2007
Another of the charmingly barmy ads for Skittles has a red Skittle being asked by a strange looking figure whether he has been sitting in the sun too long. And if that seems bizarre... wait until you hear the answer... the explanation for his red colour is that he's wearing lipstick.

Skittles
"Orang Utan"
20s
25 Jul 2007
Another in the series of childishly drawn animated ads which give character to the variously coloured Skittles. Here an orange sweet (who looks a bit red to us but never mind) berates those who think he is ginger. No-one likes that accusation and he reminds them he's an Orang(e) Utan.
