Cameras are back in fashion just in time for Christmas, and Canon tap into the trend with this stylish ad for their mobile picture printer. The visual effects are impressive here, especially considering they were done mainly, er, in-camera, but the music-box soundtrack seems to imply there's a sinister story behind the freeze-frame.

Canon are bucking the trend and skipping a Christmas ad altogether this winter - choosing to focus instead on the coming year. To a slowly-amping soundtrack, we see a montage of shots which cut just before something happens - a dive, a goal, a baby trying lemon for the first time - to remind us we should be ready with a camera when the big moment comes. Cleverly structured work.

Three-hundred-and-sixty-five days of summer sounds ideal, doesn't it? Fat chance of it happening, but it's the core idea behind this halcyon Canon ad. 'Mad Max' star Zoë Kravitz turns New York into her personal photography studio and snaps with abandon. Another picturesque bid to wean younger audiences onto traditional photography.

Perhaps wary of smartphones stealing their thunder, Canon wish to reassert their photography credentials. Life moves at light speed in this ad depicting youth evolving into young manhood. Like any good story, there are thrills and spills - and the brand wants every moment to look its best. There are no product shots or specifications, so it’s up to the viewer to follow Canon’s story thread further.

This compelling Canon film benefits from some strong visual storytelling. We hear a photojournalist describe the myriad threats involved in his chosen career - all for 1/125th of a second. Shots of shattered glasses and bulletproof vests underline the risks involved, and the brand reaffirms its support for those who put themselves in harm's way.

Dark Energy director Dave Aspinall recently accompanied photojournalist Gali Tibbon to the small town of Vrnjačka Banja in Serbia, where he documented her first assignment using the new Canon EOS M5. We follow Tibbon as she explains the intricacies of trying to capture authentic images and get past the 'stand still and smile' reaction most people have on seeing a camera being pointed at them.

This impressive ad for Canon has the feel of a Christmas card picked by someone thinking outside the box. Academy's Marcus Söderlund develops the hardy bond between this horse and its owner as they traverse whiteout conditions. We assume these two would give anything for a warm stable and a comfy seat by the fire... but it turns out they're in their element.

DAVID has no head for heights so this stunning commercial for Canon made him literally feel sick. Indeed, this description is being written from memory because the thought of watching it again is unbearable. It follows the progression of a pair of foolhardy Slavs as they sneak their way to the top of a really high tower and share the view via the advertised gadgetry.

JWT and Jonathan Glazer have let the footage do the talking as we watch urban deer taking over the neighbourhood in the wee hours. It's brave to rely so heavily on the appeal of the 'Springwatch' style footage and - in truth - it feels as though it needs another element to anchor the footage to something the advertised cameras can do.

Jonathan Glazer has captured the spectacle of Florence's Calcio Storico - an annual contest which has retained the brutality of football's medieval origins in an apparent free-for-all of physical violence. The shots are beautiful, and that's very much the point as the whole thing was shot using commercially-available equipment made by Canon.

Seeing that the dedicated camera market is suffering thanks to the rise and rise of the camera phone, this does a surprisingly good job of making Canon's cameras and related teccy items seem rather sexy. Great use of music, and the clear perspex cubes forming a Christmas tree is strikingly done.

Canon urge us to listen to our inner selves with this spot which encourages us to take that next step with their help. Whether it's a modest goal such as getting "a hundred likes", or more ambitious - using your 20 x zoom while canoeing among icebergs - they press home the notion that they're the ones to ensure your success.

Using the advertised camera, a man is able to "see things differently". This is illustrated via some clever trick photography which showcases the potential range of images that he can capture if he uses his imagination... and the expensive bit of kit this ad is exhorting us to purchase.

"Never Be The Same Again"

This attractively-filmed commercial may prove counter-productive. Surely the last thing a photographer wants to think about a camera is that it might pixelate your pictures? The visual metaphor created by this ad manages to suggest that your photos will come unstitched.

"Bring Colour To Life"

A beautiful evocation of the idea that the advertised printer 'brings colour to life'. Bouncing droplets of different coloured inks dance before our very eyes to illustrate the vividness of both the metaphor and the output we can expect from Canon's latest printer. A lovely demonstration of how a simple idea can benefit from a complex execution.

A photographer uses the advertised camera to take some attractive pictures in Venice. The ad has been filmed so beautifully that you can't help feeling that the camera is in the hands of the wrong guy... let's see what the DOP can do with it.

"14x Closer"

A man at a festival uses the advertised camera to capture images of a giant insect being 'walked' through the square by a squadron of carnival revellers. The intelligent gadget with its powerful zoom is all he needs to capture the moment... or he could download this ad.

Another ad in this cute American series for the Canon Powershot depicts a woman singing along to The Clash classic I Fought The Law when her dog unexpectedly joins in. The advertised camera is perfect for this situation... apparently.

15 Dec 2009
This cute American ad highlights the ability of the advertised camera to catch any of the "gazillions" of situations that life throws at us. For example, a teenage girl bouncing up and down on a sofa pretends that a fall was intentional when she accidentally trips over the back.

This attractively put together piece for Canon shows adults fooling around in the woods using the advertised camera to surprise one another. A pleasant soundtrack plays as they stalk each other and use the camera's clever technology to grab spontaneous snaps.

A forensic examination of a penalty kick is used to highlight the visual qualities of Canon's camera equipment. High definition has been used to good effect to highlight the detail as a player places the ball on the spot. Another timely commercial as the European Championships get underway.

"In Action"

Brief post script to previous ad shows us the printer in action in order to demonstrate, presumably, its ease of use. Got to hand it to Canon for boasting of the printer's all-in-one paper and print cartridge as if this benefits the end user. That would be consumables you can only buy from Canon then.

Canon
"Beach Fun"

A group of youngsters lark about on the beach capturing their fun with a Canon camera and immediately outputting their pics on a Selphy printer. Some of the photos are especially inventive and the effect of the ad is to make you want to emulate their creativity.

Canon
"Free Fall"

13 Nov 2006
Eye-catching sequence shows people falling towards the ground and then landing on their feet signalling the suggestion that the Earth is your playground when you have access to a Canon 400D. Quite how is beyond DAVID but if Canon would care to send him one for free maybe he could figure it out.
