eBay continue their Amazon-baiting campaign with a Christmas ad which tells us to break up with beige. We see a montage of quirky festive moments - from skiing with a cuppa to creative cake decoration and even a surfing Santa. The music in this campaign remains dreadful, but it doesn't detract too much from the well-constructed visuals.

There's so much to admire in this commercial for eBay that you can almost forgive the dreadful music... almost. In it, a paralympian uses a timer to both measure her training effort and ensure the bread in her oven emerges perfectly risen. Choosing when and how to represent disability is incredibly difficult, but this kind of depiction - casual yet positive - illustrates a really excellent approach.

As professional gaming achieves further credibility, eBay lend their support to full-time players like Hannah Rutherford. Rutherford relates her journey from arcade cabinets to headsets and high-end PCs. The Let’s Play enthusiast believes gaming has become a legitimate enterprise - and outlets like eBay can help Rutherford stay on top of her game.

eBay draw out another character from their anti-beige campaign in this brief ad. We see a bloke gather all the equipment he needs to make music, from microphones to musical instruments, and get creative. He even picks up some snazzy new trainers for good measure, illustrating the diversity of products available from not-Amazon.

The Great British Bake Off has shown anyone can shake, whisk, and roll - like this tattooed bloke, for instance. Having procured all his baking essentials from eBay, he wields a mean piping bag while decorating some sugar skull cookies. The online marketplace hope the programme’s watch-and-buy appeal continues on Channel 4.

eBay take a swipe at Amazon in this 40” commercial. As boxes trundle along a conveyer belt, the online marketplace asks: “When did shopping get so [ahem] beeeeeeeeeeeige?” Shots fired. Elsewhere, the ad ticks several boxes: diverse casting; snappy editing; and a trendy line in individualism. A bright effort from the e-commerce giant.

This eBay import features a father and son with different tastes. One enjoys early morning push-ups and the very latest tech; the other prefers vinyl and lazing in bed. What brings them together? "A very nice song" called 'Lonely Boy' by the Black Keys. We're sure the band will be delighted with the review.

DDB Europe capture the awkwardness of school discos in this entertaining ad for eBay. Various teenagers navigate a delicate social situation with the help of products acquired through the bidding site, including cute socks for a goth with an identity crisis and aftershave for the gamer whose strategy is evidently to gas his prey into submission. Lovely script.

"Zombie Apocalypse"

8 May 2016
Unless you've been living under a zombie-proof rock in the last years, you'll know that the undead have become a staple of popular culture. This entertaining slice of horror on behalf of eBay gives everyone a fighting chance come the zombie apocalypse by detailing the essentials required to avoid a grisly fate - all of which can be handily found on the online auction site. Good, ghoulish fun.

19 Oct 2015
This US spot for eBay is distinct and stylish in its design; featuring products that tie in with the lyrics to Ke$ha's track 'Tik Tok'. It's one of five commercials in the campaign and it's lovely to look at, although it might have benefited from showing the eBay logo somewhere before the end. It's cool enough as a logo to include without compromising the rest of the ad.

eBay
"Unloved Gifts"

25 Dec 2014
This terrific ad for eBay captures - down to the tiniest nuance - the gamut of emotions we feel and try to hide on receiving an exciting-looking gift that turns out to be everything we never wanted. Not only that, it also captures the gleeful anticipation of the giver, which of course only makes the situation worse. Excellent casting, excellent performances coaxed out.

eBay
"Don't Like Your Gift?"
30s
29 Dec 2013
This wryly amusing ad guiltily admits that eBay is the first recourse for people disappointed with their Christmas gifts. So when an indulged grandchild gets a set of encyclopaedias and a couple get matching espresso makers, they needn't despair. The last gag is the best, purely for the recipient's expressions.

eBay
"Pony"

8 Nov 2012
One of those marvellous ads at which the Americans excel. A little girl is delighted when she walks down the stairs on Christmas Day and finds a pony - that's a pony - in her living room. Delight soon turns to horror though as the little horse panics and unleashes hell. Still, a quick browse at eBay's offerings and another more sensible pony is on the way.

This is like someone has taken eBay's most recent television commercial and put into one of those fancy dan flame machines and pressed a button marked 'tinsel'. (We feel obliged to point out that any suggestion that post-production is merely a matter of pressing buttons and allowing computers to do all the work is entirely unfair.)

eBay
"The One That Got Away"

17 Oct 2012
In this lovely commercial for the online auction service, a man describes how he bid successfully to reclaim the motorcycle he'd sold earlier in his life. It's a lovely piece of documentary and it gets five stars from us even despite the awful soundtrack which is designed to underline his emotional account but almost derails its impact.

eBay
"Phone"
30s
24 Sep 2012
The woman in this commercial imagines that everything she finds on eBay has been specially put there for her. And to illustrate this idea, we are shown a dedicated shop inside her phone designed to represent the infinite department store of her imagination. The voice-over strikes a strange note... it sounds like it's designed to be understood by someone whose English isn't up to much.

eBay
"Your Shopping Universe"

1 Mar 2012
A man makes his way through a series of set-ups representing the variety of offering available through the world's biggest auction site. Increasingly, eBay seems determined to pitch itself as a more orthodox retailer... probably, to assuage the fears who find the idea of online bidding a bit intimidating.

eBay
"She's Behind You"
30s
23 Nov 2007
One of the four eBay characters manages to reveal the presents he has bought for another in the second of the pantomime-based ads for the online retailer. 'Jack' is describing what he bought for 'Cinderella' without realising that in the iconic line of the form that "she's behind him".

"Pantomime"

10 Nov 2007
The four eBay characters take part in a Christmas pantomime designed to remind us that it's possible to use the online auction site for purchasing Christmas gifts and doing so doesn't make you a dodgy cheapskate. (Oh yes it does). Cheap skates are probably available there as well.

eBay
"1970s Party"
60s
10 Oct 2007
The four new animated eBay characters decide to hold a 1970s party and naturally turn to the online auction site to kit themselves up for it. This ad even features a moment when one of them misses out - a truthful reminder that not everyone can win an auction.

The four colourful eBay characters are back. They have new hairstyles but we recognised them in any case thanks to whole blue, green, yellow and red thing. One of them has spotted a dress on the Internet auction site and is now able to follow its price via a new television channel.

eBay
"Attic"

11 Feb 2007
Another outing for the four animated eBay figures as they root around for rubbish they longer want to sell on the online auction Site. We don't want to sound alarmist but if the global economy is reduced to moving money and second-hand tat around the World then we are all going to die.

eBay
"Unwanted Clothes"

27 Jan 2007
Four new animated characters (looking a lot like the old ones) for eBay. One woman suggests to another she can sell her unwanted handbags on eBay whereupon another agrees adding, "I'll buy them." Er, no need for eBay then, is there? Incidentally, one of the quartet appears to be a red Indian.

Another outing for the four iconic eBay characters as they ponder Christmas gifts for people on a list and find rhymes provide the solutions until they try to think of a gift for Esmerelda. A Nissen shelter? A helter skelter?

eBay

The animated eBay characters from the previous ad return with more rapid-fire banter. This time one of them keeps saying: "I wanna box" leading his chums to think he wants 'a box' when, in fact, he wants 'to box'. Clever iconography which already makes these ads instantly recognisable.
