Some say cricket is the supreme numbers game. Runs, bowling averages, the Duckworth-Lewis method… everything counts. This gripping New Balance ad reveals that only 676 players have represented England at Test level… and the team’s new kit maker have a message for whoever’s next in line.

New Balance strengthen their foothold in the UK market with this understated film profiling some of our top athletes and their most formidable adversaries: themselves. The likes of Aaron Ramsay, Joe Root, and Heather Watson reveal how looking inward has provided them with the necessary drive to succeed in their respective fields. It's a thoughtful idea and one that chimes well with the brand's ethos of constant refinement.

A woman is out running in austere terrain when a strange dust storm billows up and rumbles towards her like something out of a James Herbert book. But lo! This is a pyroclastic flow of American athletes sponsored by New Balance, and as she stands and watches they kick footballs and bat balls without even appearing to notice the apocalyptic weather all around them. This is silly and grand at the same time.

We rather like the simplicity behind this ad for New Balance. In slow motion, a baseball player prepares to strike the ball thrown at him. But instead of hearing the sound of the bat swishing through the air and the crack of the ball hitting the wood, we hear a freight train drawing closer and closer; sounding its whistle at the moment of impact.

The runner at the centre of this New Balance ad finds herself in a sand storm of Mad Max proportions. Having apparently reached her limits, she's engulfed by a stampede of athletes to show there is no rest for the top tier. Once the dust has settled, she's ready for more. Impressive VFX work portrays the brand as a dynamic sportswear option.

A group of joggers head out in the night... their fluorescent trainers bright flashes of colour as they make their way towards their goal - not to outrun one another, but to give a neglected play park a new lease of life. It's an astute way of suggesting that New Balance isn't all "me, me, me" like some of the other sportswear brands.

A beautifully filmed spot for sportswear brand New Balance imparts the philosophy that progress can only be achieved by moving forward. Standing still may be a way to observe, reflect and learn, but if you continually push forward you will be in and of the world rather than outside it; so this is your chance to experience what it has to offer. Compelling and resonant.

A young man ponders his future in this beautifully photographed commercial for New Balance. It turns out he's just been accepted at the exclusive Julliard School in New York and perhaps has a better chance of success than many. It's a stylish way to connect the advertised sportswear with aspiration and achievement.

A lone runner makes his way through streets in the early morning before emerging into a dramatic landscape where he encounters other runners. They're headed to the factory where the advertised trainers are distributed and he joins the queue for this patriotic brand.

Everyone stares at a man who runs along with a pair of feet growing out of the top of his head. He makes his way to the hospital where they examine x-rays of his foot-adorned head and get ready for surgery. But is there a less radical cure for his affliction?

This film examines the love-hate relationship that many people have with running. The visual side of the ad is very good as a man impressively moves from a real landscape into a largely animated landscape... but the plodding voiceover lets it down.
