UK Banks

From first birthdays and first dates and first jobs and beyond, this skillfully crafted ad for UBS follows one man's life; touching on all the moments which shape him. The scenes are all connected by numbers, building to a final reveal that smart online investment with the advertised bank has allowed him to save up for his daughter's wedding.

Tying banks to life's milestones isn't an unfamiliar concept - almost all the big hitters have delivered their own version of 'we're always here for you' since 2008 - but Publicis and Rattling Stick have come together to produce a piece of work that stands out from the crowd. Everything from the appearance of changing film quality over the years to the central character's gradual ageing has been carefully planned and astutely executed - lovely work from all involved.

A couple are setting up their tent when a few drops of rain begin to fall. One meaningful glance later and they're headed for a luxury hotel. It's a slightly garbled message... we're supposed to sympathise with the pair but actually it's impossible to avoid the thought that they're (a) idiotic for not realising it might rain and (b) shallow for giving up so easily... so empathy goes out the window.

Another in this wry series for UBS looking at the ageing process. A chap making an online transaction has to select the year he was born in, and scrolls through the dropdown menu to find the right date. He scrolls... and he scrolls.... and he scrolls. Hmmm. Perhaps the time to start thinking about retirement plans isn't so far off.

This spot for UBS commits to screen the experience increasingly familiar to middle-aged people concerning their eyewear. A man hunts high and low for his glasses with an expression on his face that says "Am I going mad?" Of course, he doesn't want to say anything just in case his doubts are confirmed... and of course, his specs are closer to hand than he realises.

This spot for USB is one of several which act as timely reminders that tempus fugit and all that; indeed, much faster than we care to think. Here, two women are queueing to get into a nightclub. Women in front of them are being asked for proof of age... but when it comes to these two, no such proof is deemed necessary. Very nicely done.

There's nothing like heading home after a long day at work, loosening the tie, and turning the car volume up loud. Well, not too loud. This office worker's desire to mute Axl Rose's dulcet tones prompts a lovely exchange of awkward looks between the two pals and the ad does an amusing job of encouraging retired headbangers like this chap to consider life cover with UBS.

The animated technique which places us in the driver's seat of a Formula One car has been done rather well but the message it conveys is a little too corporatist for our taste. It's hard to like a commercial that feels as though it is aimed of people much wealthier than yourself.

The problem with the way this ad makes use of the definitive article is that few of the examples they cite are as definitive as it suggests. And if they are open to dispute then, presumably, so is the commercial's central claim about the usefulness of the advertised bank.

UBS's boast is that they don't only listen to what their customers say, they also listen to what their customers don't say. Odd really. Do UBS mean that will send you a baby elephant on the basis that you never said you didn't want one? Anyhow, typically beautiful portraits accompany the babble.

According to this ad, UBS provides you with the kind of one on one attention for which you usually need a stalker. We see client and adviser in a variety of stunning locations including one sweeping shot of the two of them on top of a skyscraper which makes DAVID cower beneath his desk.
