The second track released from Charlotte Gainsbourg's album Rest, 'Deadly Valentine' is an offbeat, dreamy dance number. It's about finding The One: about being childhood sweethearts who grow up and grow old together without ever falling out of love.
Sounds hellish cheesy, but both the song and the accompanying promo elegantly sidestep the ripe Camembert landmines to deliver something rather haunting and gorgeous.
Gainsbourg herself directs the clip. In it, we watch as two young children, playing bride and groom, blossom into shy teenagers before morphing into their adult selves depicted by Gainsbourg and Dev Hynes (of Blood Orange).
There's absolutely nothing slick about this promo. And that's what makes it work - it hasn't had all the air and spontaneity sucked out of it. Instead, there are some truly lovely moments between the younger versions of the couple which infuse it with the sense of wonder we experience when we fall for someone.
Certainly makes the case for checking out the rest of, er, Rest.
