K’naan, Residente, Riz MC (aka Riz Ahmed), and Snow Tha Product team up for Hamilton Mixtape track 'Immigrants (We Get The Job Done)'. Accompanied by Mister Whitmore's unflinching visuals, the song is at once a scathing indictment of the treatment of immigrants in the US, and a promise that they're not giving in any time soon.
We're shown gritty visuals of sweatshops and fruit picking, cleaners and manual labourers, along with the grim conditions faced by those fleeing worse. Textile workers sewing the American flags held up by those rejecting their right to exist is an especially cutting image.
In a country founded by immigrants yet afraid of the word, this promo - and song - is no holds barred. There are no euphemistic references to 'migrants' as K'naan, pictured in an overcrowded slum bedroom, raps about 'sailing on graves' and 'tombstones disguised as waves'.
Residente blatantly states 'half of Gringoland is really Mexican land', and Riz MC audaciously begins his address to a faceless racist with 'AOA', a common abbreviation of As-salamu alaykum. These are the rallying cries of 'America's ghostwriters', who are tired of being stepped on.
Snow Tha Product in particular is a furious revelation. The sheer fiery genius of her line 'You claim I’m stealing jobs though/ Peter Piper claimed he picked them, he just underpaid Pablo' linguistically KOs everything that's ever come out of the current US President's mouth regarding immigration.
The climax of the promo shows immigration agents rounding up those on the train... only to miss the people riding on top of it. Confrontational and fearless, this should be required watching on Independence Day - or whenever an idiot breaks out the 'coming over here stealing our jobs' rhetoric.
