Comprising members of The Belligerents, Moses Gunn Collective and Jungle Giants, Confidence Man is a brand new Brisbane band whose track 'Boyfriend (Repeat)' is as sassy and surefooted as its name.
Vocalist Janet Planet doesn't sing so much as announce, and what she tells us is that she is infinitely weary of the generic nature of her men: “He's just a repeat / Of what I had before.”
It's a terrific contrast with the energy of the music's irresistibly bouncy beat, and directorial duo Schall & Schnabel have come up with a suitably colourful promo - in more ways than one. The unexpected thing here is that the bright pastel backgrounds are an incongruous backdrop to unrelenting scenes of torture.
A selection of Ken and Kevin dolls (as Barbie's boyfs are called down under) find themselves subjected to death by fire, box cutters, skewers and more by a pair of prettily-manicured hands. Fortunately, there's no attempt to animate them in order to witness their suffering - instead, their unflinching inanity simply emphasises the singer's complaint that they are - each and every one - replaceable.
It's a wonderfully ingenious bit of work, and one that de Sade would heartily endorse before probably asking to borrow the blowtorch for his own ends.
