UK Promos

Zhang + Knight’s latest Ghostpoet promo appears to be set in the same dystopian future as the duo’s ‘Immigrant Boogie’ video. Now we find ourselves in a grey metropolis where the pollution forecast is grim.

The Agile pair bring a murky, smog-ridden aesthetic to Obaro Ejimiwe’s guitar-driven track. Whether it’s a rooftop aerobics class or an underground train, there’s no escaping the oppressive atmosphere. Well, not quite.

Relief comes in the form of pills and synthetic chow. A chemical hit summons birds, plants, and raspberries. These synthetic reminders of nature provide brief respite. Even a ‘food’ vendor can’t resist her own merchandise. Everyone’s chasing their next fix - will their lungs hold out?

Grounded production design gives this grave new world substance. There’s a flirtatious lilt to Ghostpoet’s vocals, but we imagine love - like clean air - is in short supply.

Too long, doesn't tell me what it is, and the breezy voiceover at the end seems entirely inappropriate.

The title of Ghost Poet's latest release lends an additional layer of nightmarishness to the track itself. The word 'Boogie' carries a certain 70s jauntiness, evoking Elton John, Earth Wind & Fire, and John Travolta strutting his stuff. Here though, the dancer is a refugee; his dancefloor a war zone leading to a hoped-for sanctuary that simply turns its back on him.
