Ireland Cider / Perry

Bulmers Ireland show us a scene with a twist in this energetic ad - reminding us how Irish their cider is just in time for St Paddy's. A pulsing soundtrack accompanies what looks like a house party only the cool kids are invited to, but appearances can be deceiving...

Soon the scene is annotated with percentages which make witty observations about what's really going on with the partygoers. A woman gazes into the distance, trying to remember switching her straighteners off; a man laughs along with his mates despite having no idea what the joke is; another man courageously commits to throwing shapes regardless of the fact he's probably at the wrong bash.

The annotations have a satisfyingly universal feel (we've all seen at least one bloke on a night out who 82% fancies himself), and build up nicely to the final observation that Bulmers is 100% Irish. A solid creative executed with aplomb - excellent work from Neil Gorringe and Lucky Generals.

The proliferation of cider variants in recent times has been quite staggering. Every drinks brand appears to be dipping its toes into the fermented apple market. Thus, the need to stand out ad-wise has rarely been more important and this commercial for Bulmers - a big player in this market - satisfies that need with sophisticated ease.

Not even adam&eveDDB can nail it every single time, and this film for Bulmers suggests no-one is quite sure what to make of the news that the product is available in a variety of different colours. Add an anodyne music track into the mix and you're left with a technically competent film that doesn't have much heart for a product that looks like it's designed to appeal to the under 12s.

Bulmers have upped their game with a new campaign for their apple and pear-based alcoholic drinks. Classily shot, it takes you on a reverse journey through an evening, ending with the beginning - friends drinking the advertised product in the pub. It's fun, and suggests quite cleverly that you don't have to get off your face to have a good night out.

This ad's payoff is rather delightful. Those brave enough to accept an invitation to see an unknown band in a pub discover that the performer is not an obscure nonentity but Plan B. It's a clever way of suggesting that taking a chance on the advertised drink will deliver rewards.

Comedian Tim Key urges us to come forward and identify ourselves as experimental people. If you want to know more, head to the Bulmers Facebook page and they'll be able to tell you whether or not you fit the bill. A willingness to try red cider might prove the acid test.

This blipvert for Bulmers cider was run consistently through the evening during the ad breaks but it was so short it almost looked as though it belonged to the ad before it or the ad after it. A glance at the relevant Facebook page suggests it's met with some success.

This is a nice conceit. Whenever anyone orders the advertised cider, a special crew unleashes summer on them. Of course, when the winter comes, they'll also be suggesting that this drink suits that season as well.

Tom is the most popular man in the Irish village where he lives because he can bestow the privilege of turning on the Christmas lights. The vigorous lobbying of his neighbours comes to nought in the end as a falling apple completes the ceremony.

An Irishman trying to adjust to the idea of drinking cider made from pears is appalled when his cat appears to be trying to persuade him to make the conversion. He exiles the cat from his garden shed where he's contemplating apples.

There's a heartfelt tribute to the dubious charms of the British summer in this ad for the summer drink which manages to simultaneously have its tongue inside and outside its cheek. Nonetheless, it's nice to see the scenes of people enjoying the drink punctuated with a little humour.

If you can't beat 'em... Bulmers jumps aboard the cider with ice bandwagon in this nicely crafted ad which spoofs a wildlife documentary as it follows the progress of a cluster of bottles accidentally tipped into the tropical sea. The little blighters aren't happy until they have made their way to icier climes.
