When you compare this ad to the equivalent 'order for Christmas' spot by DFS, it just shows how greatly the same message can differ in tone. While DFS evokes a warm, seasonal feeling, CSL's shots of motorways accompanied by an 80-style soft rock track feels vaguely depressing.

Thanks to various finance deals and the prospect of getting more money back on your original price, there should be "nothing between you and your perfect sofa". All well and good, but the aggressively purposeful manner in which this model strips as she heads towards a leather 3-seater suggests she's going to shag the legs off it. Disturbing.

Appealingly bizarre musical-style ad that curiously links Fiddler on the Roof to cut-price sofas. It mostly consists of a dancer in costumes made of various sofa fabrics whirling around a customer. He eventually tumbles giddily onto an actual sofa while discount price supers pop up around him.

Crikey... this is My Fair Lady substituting sofas for flower sellers (with a bit of help from Fiddler on the Roof). CSL's price-led, offer-driven approach has been transformed into a society belle who wouldn't recognise an interest-free incentive if it laid its silk-lined cape over a puddle for her.

CSL seem to have decided that other furniture retailers are staffed by pretty young men and women who know nothing about sofas. These rivals are literally eviscerated as CSL customers hang on the words of their staff issuing pearls of wisdom such as 'four years interest free credit'.

The voiceover explains the various things that CSL love in this ad which shows how you can use tip-top technology to help you imagine what one of the advertised sofas will look like in your home. Well, we say tip-top technology but, in truth, it might not be Silicone Valley's finest moment.

A woman walks into a branch of the advertised furniture retailer filled with cynical ideas about bogus accounts and the like. But this isn't that kind of furniture store... at least, not this week. A man reassures her that their prices are always low.

It wouldn't be surprising to learn that CSL staff were using the current riots as cover for arson in a bid to burn down the chain's stores so they could avoid facing the public after being portrayed in this commercial as sexually predatory masseurs.

"Girls On Film"

The Duran Duran song Girls On Film provides the musical backdrop in this lively furniture store commercial. While it's not exactly Cadbury 'Gorilla', it's still better than we've come to expect from this particular sector of the market.

Various ways of buying CSL's offerings are explored in this unusually long ad for the furniture retailer. CSL is largely a Northern chain... Manchester sounds like a crime drama series set in the grubby streets of Moss Side, doesn't it?

"Life, Love And Sofas That Last"

Sofas appear to last longer than relationships in this commercial for CSL. A series of crises in the love lives of several people are depicted in quick sequence but don't try to figure out what's going on... it's all an excuse to show off some snazzy furniture.

A standard furniture commercial is hugely enhanced by a wise choice of music. As people look around at the furniture store, an agreeable pop tune provides a pleasant alternative to the usual ranting and raving.

This piece for the furniture retailer suggests that the products they sell are a haven in our busy lives by placing them in public places and depicting the hurly-burly of urban activity continuing all around them as people are able to relax for a few moments.

A woman catches a feather as it floats in the air but this is no ordinary feather... it's a magic feather and it manages to convert the colour of the sofas and enables a 3D pop up book to come to life. As ads in this sector go there is nothing to fault here.

A little bit of craft is added to the standard technique of flashing a bunch of sofas accompanied by their prices. Each scene segueways into the next via one of the objects in it. It's quite surprising that they bothered... but it's nice to see a little effort in this sector.

CSL
"Call Me Baby"

21 Aug 2007
The only reason for including this commercial is because it looks so much like an ad for another furniture retailer known by three letters that it's kind of surprising that it isn't. A jaunty pop tune plays out against people relaxing on the sofas available there.
