UK Cereals

Breakfast is a blank canvas, we're told in this colourful commercial for Kellogg's Bran Flakes. So use your crockery as a palette and create a stunning artwork every day with cereal as your medium.

Potter, painter, abstract expressionist or classical realist - whatever your particular bent is, the humble flake can do you proud. Mix it up with fruit or yogurt or, er, fruit and hey presto! you're the Jackson Pollock of the breakfast table. Eat that, porridge!

The spot is very well crafted... while it's hard to embellish Bran Flakes in a way that makes them seem an exciting proposition, the way this is made is nigh on flawless.

Admittedly, the decision to go back to Chris Hoy for a second helping after his dreadful performance in a previous Kellogg's ad does bring Bran Flakes to mind as wanting a second helping of the advertised breakfast cereal seems equally implausible.

A series of attractive sunrises is used to remind us that every single day is a new dawn and gives us the chance to improve on what went before. It's clearly a message designed for those who feel there's no point in having a healthy breakfast today if the previous night ended with a deep-fried kebab and a six pack of Special Brew.

The objects which purportedly make up the elements of a day are piled on top of one another in this peculiar ad for Kellogg's Bran Flakes. Presumably the suggestion is that you'll be able to get through your day more easily if you start the day with a bowl of the breakfast cereal but it's a tenuous idea... to say the least.

A rapid succession of ad spoofs promising fitness via outlandish approaches are replaced by the reassuring voice of Kevin ("what did you just say, Lewis?") Whately who explains that a combination of Bran Flakes, fruit and water is a much simpler way of achieving health.

A woman on a bicycle is doing much better than the women she sees in the street each of whom is carrying an item to indicate that their digestion is not in good health. One of the women is carrying an anvil - we're guessing she stole it from Wile E Coyote.

DAVID feels sure Kellogg's have made this point before in an ad many moons ago. In any case, there is as much fibre in a bowl of Bran Flakes as there is in nine potatoes. Interesting though that the claim that four out of five people are eating enough fibre is backed by a survey that's three years old.

William Shatner continues his crusade to prevent young Britons from following his example and turning into tubs of lard. Here he invites a bus queue to join him in his limousine and explains how the step counter that comes free with the cereal will help them.

In 1982 Audrey Eyton's F-Plan was the faddy diet of its day and now she has written a sequel called the F2 Diet and Kellogg's are getting behind it presumably because it advises you to fill yourself up to your gills with delicious All Bran. Yummy.

Another Bran Flakes Challenge is complete and it is time for William Shatner to depart the police station he has been visiting. Music from Cagney & Lacey (presumably no-one would have recognised the TJ Hooker theme) they play a prank on him by putting him in a line-up.

William Shatner takes his Bran Flakes challenge to the local police station where the workers attempt to fit in their bowl of Bran Flakes around their police work. Shatner seems an odd choice as brand spokesman for a healthy product as he resembles a bloated corpse.

More Kellogg's Out Takes than Bran Flakes here as William Shatner reprises his role as the unwelcome house guest imposing Bran Flakes on an English couple. Much laughter is derived from his American pronunciation of the word "yoghurty".
